working together!

I have learnt in the breathe workshops as well as in the breathe sessions that in a working in a team helps with coming up with new and different ideas, especially as it was to do with texture and techniques. working in a team enabled us to bounce ideas off each other and progress.

Latex samples!

Me and Amy (who is also in the same group) spent the day making seaweed looking latex samples for the elders.

These were easy to make, we mixed paint into the latex and on clingfilm put on the latex and added into it bits of fabric, string, yarn and ribbon, anything that we had laying around.
we found these look really effective and would look good if they were put into the fringing.

We did lots of samples but i learnt that in order to get something that looks right you have to do as many samples as you need to see what works and what doesn't. Also working with Amy we found we had different ideas that we both then tried and come up with something better.

Saw this image and thought of the things i am doing in breathe!

textiles research.

I have looked at a few books for textiles research, I haven't got any images but here are the books i have used.

Campbell-Harding, V. 2006. Edges and finishes in machine embroidery. Batsford Ltd; New edition edition.

Stitch, Dissolve, Distort with Machine Embroidery

Grey, M. 2006. stitch dissolve distort with machine embroidery. Batsford LTD.

Inspiration!

A few photographs from Weymouth beach (from battle for the winds) that may inspire me for Breathe, for colours and textures mainly.

Breathe!

Breathe club.

Breathe club this week was the same, with a few workshops going on, and again was enjoyable. This week i had my sister visit me so i took her along, she's not usually into art/textiles but she enjoyed herself. We made Barnacles, which is the first time we had made and was easy and therapeutic to make.

Breathe session.

Saw this and thought of the hunters cape.

First Breathe club.

Wednesday evening will be when every breathe club is on, this is where we will produce textiles and creative things in little workshops for the breathers costumes, and also where people in the community can come in and help us. This Wednesday was the first one we held. I really enjoyed it, even though not many people did turn up which was disappointing, it was a relaxed environment where we could just chat to people while making something that isn't too hard to make.

This week the workshops were:

  • Painting the base costumes.
  • Fringing.
  • Cable tie bracelets for wrists and ankles.

breeches research!

Before making my breeches i did a little research, looking at the different shapes, fabric choices and gentlemen's clothing in the 18th century in general just so i had a bit of an idea of what to expect.  Here are some links to some site,

DESCRIPTION:

In this project the costume store I intend to develop my sewing skills to a higher standard. I will learn new processes of how to put different garments together and how to finish them, as well as new techniques that I may not off had chance to do on other projects. I will also develop my time management skills, as I only have a certain amount of time to make a garment I need to set certain days outside of set sessions to work on them as well as including breathe and any other projects I have going on. I will also be working on the breathe project, to help work on costumes for the breathers in the Olympic opening celebrations in Weymouth. This will give me the chance to be really creative, as a contrast alongside the costume store. There will also be a lot of problem solving of how to create certain things for different elements of each costume, in which skills I learn within making garments for the costume store may help as well as trying out other things I may not be able to for my garments.

I have chosen to do the costume store project as I want to develop my sewing skills. I also want to gain confidence in making garments which I believe this project will help me to be. Confident in the way I look at garments and work out how different garments are put together and then be able to go off and make it, knowing that the whole garment is put together correctly as well as my sewing lines, decoration and finishes being neat. Also working on breathe will allow me as a break from the neatness and accuracy of the costume store garments to be creative in the way costumes can be made, and be able to develop more into my own creativeness. This will allow me to work with textiles and work out how to do things and put things together more creatively than simply stitching pieces of fabric together.

I will be producing three garments for the costume store, an Edwardian shirt, waistcoat or breeches, and a Victorian blouse. As for breathe I will be producing a body of work that will be more creative, as I will be making parts of the costumes working on top of the base costume to create accessories and shapes. Alongside this I will be documenting my progress on my blog for both costume store and breathe.

1st day back!

The first day back was exciting. After a refocus meeting with the whole year, the costume store group had a meeting. In this meeting we got told what we was going to make within the next 3 weeks, either a waistcoat or breeches. I am making a pair of breeches in black moleskin fabric. Here are a few photos of the example pair of breeches.

After the meeting we spent the rest of the day cutting out our pattern pieces both in lining and top fabric.

Aims for this week:

  • Cut out all pattern pieces.
  • Mark and flat tack.

Pleats!!

This week was the busiest week with trying to get my Battle for the winds costume finished, as well as trying to complete the shirt. By the end of the day on Monday i got all the pleats done and started to put the shirt together. I was really pleased with the pleats and glad i did start them again, the only thing i didn't do was tack the center point of each pleat as i learnt this would of made it easier on me and maybe a little quicker when it came to sewing down that line.
This is a photo of the pleats that i didn't starch, as you can see the lines of the pleats are not straight and look  uneven.

These photo's are of the pleats that i did starch and they look loads better as the lines are much straighter.
